LOS ALAMITOS – A scoring error in the CIF Southern Section-Toyota Inland Division Individual Wrestling Championships has resulted in Santa Ana replacing Royal as the runner-up in that division.
In the round known as Consolation One, team scores from the results of that round were, inadvertently, not recorded Saturday night. Temecula Valley High School was awarded first place and Royal High School, with 174.5 points, was awarded second place ahead of Santa Ana High School with 174 points.
However, Santa Ana High School had two wrestlers who were in the Consolation One Round, Ramiro Sanchez at 103 pounds and Argenis Romero at 140 pounds. In the 103 pound bracket, Ramiro Sanchez had a bye which awarded him one team point for advancing to the next round. In the 140 pound bracket, Argenis Romero wrestled and won his match which earned him at least one team point for advancing to the next round. He could have earned an additional 1.5 point if he won that match by more than 8 points, or he could have earned an additional two points if he won that match by fall. He did, in fact, win by a fall, resulting in a net gain for Santa Ana High School, of two team points for a total of 178 points.
Royal High School also had a wrestler in Consolation One in the 125 pound class, Hector Barajas. Hector Barajas had a bye and advanced to the next round, which earned 1 team point for Royal High School. This resulted in a net gain for Royal High School of one team point for a total of 175.5 points. With the points from Consolation 1 added, Santa Ana High School moved in front of Royal High School for second place, 178 points to 175.5.
